Ees Wyke Country House: A weekend in the Lakes

Where is Ees Wyke Country House?

The Lake District offers many wonderful places to stay. These can range from 4-star hotels to excellent camp sites. Ees Wyke Country House is luxury accommodation based in Ambleside and certainly delivers an excellent stay on all levels.

Once the holiday home of Beatrix Potter this elegant Georgian house in Near Sawrey overlooks Esthwaite Water and is located close to the fells of Coniston Old Man.

Travelling to The Lake District

The Lake District is most accessible via car, however, there is plenty of public transport available. The closest train station is Windermere, which is located next to a Booths Supermarket.

From the train station the best route to Eesy Wyke Country House is via the Ferry. When the Ferry is not running however the route around the lake is over 10 miles. Walking will take you the best part of 2-2.5hrs or a taxi will cost you around £30.

The most common Motorway junction exit is Junction 36. Follow the signs for Windermere.

Facilities and Location

We’d found Ees Wyke Country House on Booking.com. Impressed with the reviews we booked a room with a view out over the lake. We planned a weekday trip to stay over for 2-nights and do some hiking. Louise hadn’t yet hiked Helvellyn so that was on our agenda.

Taking the train from Moorside to Windermere meant several changes along the way. We arrived at Windermere threw our backpacks on and set off towards the ferry.

It didn’t take long for us both to be distracted by a pub. We stopped for a pint at The Queens before continuing on towards the ferry. The Ferry had closed due to bad weather which meant a 2-hour hike around the lake or a taxi journey. We opted to go for some lunch at The Boat House where we enjoyed stunning views of the lake before ordering a taxi.

We arrived at Ees Wyke Country House, ringing the bell at the reception we were greeted by the owner. After a few minutes of letting us know some key information relating to the house and surrounding area we were showed to our room.

We booked the Jade Room:

  • En-Suite bathroom with shower
  • Flatscreen TV
  • Free Toiletries
  • Towels
  • Hair Dryer
  • Lake & Mountains views
  • Wardrobe
  • Coffee/Tea maker with kettle and accompanying condiments
  • Seating area

Breakfast awards

Ees Wyke Country House has won many awards for their excellent breakfast. Something both myself and Louise were really looking forward to.

We were not disappointed. There was a range of options available for our breakfast but first up for us both was the Full English Breakfast.

Full English Breakfast at Ees Wyke Country House

Featuring locally made sausage and dry cured bacon from the local butcher and homemade bread. The generous buffet table has a selection of cereals, freshly squeezed juices, compotes, porridge and freshly baked croissants.  The proud recipient of The Automobile Association award for their breakfast you really can’t go wrong here.

Dinner

It isn’t just Breakfast that they serve here either. Upon booking we received an email asking us if we wanted to book in for an evening meal with them. Unfortunately we had already booked restaurants for our evening meals so we did not review the dinner menu.

The menu includes a daily changing three course dinner, utilising, wherever possible, the very best of local produce from top local suppliers.

The wine list offers a wide range of wines from the “New World” to French classics. Ees Wyke Country House were awarded a AA rosette for the 14th year running not to mention an entry in the Good Hotel Guide for 17 years running.

You should make a booking for the dinner before arrival if you wish to dine with them as the places fill up very quickly.
