The Tintwistle 7 Waterfalls walk was one we had heard a lot about. Many friends had said it was difficult to find and others said if you could find it the walk was well worth it. Actually the first time we tried to do this walk we had to turn back because of moorland fires. That day we were turn around by responders was bright blue skies and pleasantly warm. This day that we actually did the walk (some three months later) was overcast, forecast of rain and significantly cooler. And I’m so glad. For me there is something really wonderful about a moody Peak District day.

Tintwistle is only a small village but it certainly has plenty to offer — especially walking wise. You can walk around a number of reservoirs, such as, Bottoms, Valehouse and Rhodeswood reservoirs. These three in particular are useful for walks as you can do them individually or combine two or all three to do a much longer walk. There is also Arnfield reservoir with several routes — all taking in the amazing scenery this little village has to offer.

This particular walk up the seven waterfalls in Tintwistle starts out at the car park next to Arnfield reservoir. Leaving the car park and walking up past Crossgate Farm, then taking an uphill path towards the waterfalls. Then dropping down next to the stream and up past the waterfalls. The route involves some scrambling up the rock faces but nothing overly difficult. Then circling back around and following a well defined footpath back down to Crossgate Farm and then the car park you set out from.

Grassy path leading up to Tintwistle waterfalls

Leave the car park and take a left turn, following the road uphill and past the Crossgate farm/camp site. Just past the farm take a left onto a cobbled road with fields on either side and views of Arnfield reservoir over to your left.

Keep along this road for a short distance and then take a right through a gate that leads up a grassy hill. Several hundred yards up and you go through a second gate and continue head upwards — a third gate is in the distance. Upon reaching the next gate head through and continue along.

After awhile you will reach a fork. Ignore the obvious path in front of you and take the path down to your left. Dropping down you reach a narrow path heading off to the right with a wire fence to the left. Continue along this narrow path and shortly you will see the first of the waterfalls. From here you go past several waterfalls in quick succession and after the third one you have to scramble up the hill and follow the path along to the next.

At the fifth waterfall you will need to cross over to the other side. Follow the path along and it will then bend round to the left, this path then leads uphill in the direction you came from. Continue to follow this path along (there are several little grassy paths but all pretty much lead to the main access road that leads down towards a farm house.

Head through a couple of gates and then when you reach the farm and the road, take a left and walk across the bridge. Follow the road back round and you will find yourself passing the gate you began your ascent towards the waterfalls. Continue back along to the cobbled path and take a right at Crossgate farm and head back down the road to the car park from where you started.

Arnfield Fishery Cafe/Thai Restaurant

There are several options for enjoying food and drink after your walk. Arnfield Fishery offers a Cafe/Thai restaurant, which, serves fantastic food in an idyllic setting (in good weather enjoy sitting out on the decking right on the reservoir). Less than a five-minute drive up the road is The Bulls Head pub. If you are looking for delicious home cooked food — then look no further. But be warned portions are limited so once they are gone then you are out of luck I’m afraid.

Tintwistle is also a stones throw away from Padfield. Again you have various food and drink options — such as the Palentine pub as well as the local train station. Trains run from here to Manchester Piccadilly stopping at places such as Glossop, Broadbottom, Hyde and Ashburys.
