Walk this May: National walking month 2022

What is national walking month?

National walking month takes place every year during the month of May. As well as being a great initiative to get us all walking more it also gives us a great opportunity to explore our local area more.

Do you normally do the school run or go to work in the car? Can you leave the car at home and walk the route each day? If so you should definitely get involved with national walking month. Not only will you feel the physical benefits you could also raise money for the British Heart Foundation.

How can I get involved with national walking month?

As detailed above walking the school or work route is a great way to get involved with national walking month. We understand that this isn’t always practical so there are plenty of other ways you can get involved.

Lunchtime walking

Even the busiest of us usually manage at least half an hour for a lunch break, use this time to take a brisk walk. Following the pandemic a lot of us are still working remotely from home giving us greater freedom on exploring green spaces. If you find yourself struggling for time at lunch set aside half an hour after you finish to do a walk.

Explore your local area

Most of us have easy access to some form of green space, whether we know it or not. If you are aware of local routes you can follow take advantage and get out there. If you aren’t aware of the local walks in your area ten minutes on google should give you more than enough to go off.

The UK is blessed with hundreds of miles of canal towpaths which make exploring easy. Why not get out exploring for a few hours at a weekend?

Walking pets

Walking your pet is a great way to enjoy exercise – could you squeeze that extra walk in? Or perhaps just extend the walk by five or ten minutes? If you don’t have a pet yourself try arranging a walk with a friend who does have one. They may even want you to walk their pet for them.

Take on a challenge

If you are looking to do a little more – why not take on one of the many walking challenges out there? Hike up the UK’s highest mountain in Ben Nevis or walk Snowdon at night to raise money for charity. There are lots of different challenges available all ranging in difficulty.
